Asfaloth

Glorfindel's horse

Asfaloth belonged to Glorfindel, the Elf-lord of Rivendell. He was white, with a bridle and headstall set with jewels and a harness of small bells that rang as he moved, and he could run over rough ground faster than any mortal horse. He is the only horse of the Elves of Rivendell given a name in the histories.

The Flight to the Ford

When the Nine Riders crossed into Eriador in the autumn of T.A. 3018, Elrond sent riders out to find Frodo, and Glorfindel rode west on Asfaloth. Frodo and his companions heard the bells before they saw him, on the road below the Trollshaws, and feared another Black Rider. Glorfindel set the wounded hobbit on Asfaloth, shortened the stirrups, and told the horse to run if danger came, since no Rider's mount could catch him. Frodo, weakened by the Morgul-knife, protested that he would not leave his friends, but the Elf overruled him.

On October 20 the Riders came out of the trees behind them, and Glorfindel called to the horse. Asfaloth bolted forward and outran the pursuit down the last mile to the Ford of Bruinen, though Frodo, half in the shadow-world, could barely keep his seat and could not make the horse stop or turn. Asfaloth carried him through the river and up the far bank; the Riders came into the water after him, and Elrond's flood, with Gandalf's touch of white horsemen in the foam, swept them away. Frodo fell from the saddle as the flood came and knew nothing more until he woke in Rivendell.

Asfaloth is not mentioned again. He presumably returned to Rivendell with his master, and Glorfindel is later seen there and at the Grey Havens.
