Dorthonionb. F.A. 393 · d. F.A. 455
Bregolas was the elder son of Bregor and lord of the House of Bëor in Dorthonion at the breaking of the Siege of Angband. He fell in the Dagor Bragollach, and his sons Baragund and Belegund were the fathers of Morwen and Rían.
Biography
Lineage
Bregolas was born in F.A. 393, the elder son of Bregor, fourth lord of the House of Bëor after Bëor himself, Baran and Boron. His younger brother was Barahir, and his aunt was the wise-woman Andreth. When Bregor died, Bregolas succeeded him as lord of the Bëorians in the highlands of Dorthonion, holding the eastern lands of that country under Angrod and Aegnor, the sons of Finarfin.
Lord in Dorthonion
Bregolas ruled during the last decades of the long peace, when the Siege of Angband still held and the Edain had grown numerous and prosperous. His sons Baragund and Belegund were his heirs, and they grew up as companions of their cousin Beren. Little is recorded of Bregolas's rule beyond the fact that his people were among the most exposed of all the Elf-friends, living on the northern edge of the highlands where the pine forests looked out across Ard-galen toward Thangorodrim.
The Dagor Bragollach
In the winter of F.A. 455 Morgoth broke the Siege with rivers of fire and drove his armies against the northern marches. Dorthonion was among the first lands assailed. Angrod and Aegnor were killed, and Bregolas fell with a great part of the warriors of Bëor's house in the fighting that followed. His brother Barahir, fighting further west, survived to save the life of Finrod and to inherit the lordship of a people that had almost ceased to exist.
Legacy
Baragund and Belegund survived the battle and joined Barahir's band of outlaws in the highlands, where both died in F.A. 460. Their daughters had already been carried away to safety by Emeldir: Baragund's daughter Morwen married Húrin and became the mother of Túrin, and Belegund's daughter Rían married Huor and became the mother of Tuor. Through them the line of Bregolas ran into the greatest tales of the late First Age.
