Háma
Doorward of Théoden · Captain of the King's Guard
Also calledHáma the Doorward
Rohand. T.A. 3019, March 4
Háma, Doorward of Meduseld and captain of King Théoden's household guard, used his own judgement to let Gandalf keep his staff when he came to heal the king, and proposed Éowyn as ruler of the Mark in Théoden's absence. He fell before the gate of the Hornburg at Helm's Deep.
Biography
Doorward of Meduseld
Háma was the Doorward of the Golden Hall of Edoras and the captain of King Théoden's guard in the last days of the king's decline. He is not to be confused with the Háma who was the younger son of Helm Hammerhand and was lost in the Long Winter.
When Gandalf came to Meduseld on 2 March 3019 with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, Háma had orders from Gríma that no stranger should enter armed. He took their swords and axe, soothing Aragorn's anger over the sword of Elendil, and then faced the question of the wizard's staff. He decided, on his own responsibility, that an old man might be allowed a stick to lean on, and let it pass. It was the decision on which the healing of Théoden turned, and Gríma bitterly noted whose doing it was. When the king rose and cast out Wormtongue, Háma was sent to fetch Éomer from prison, and it was Háma who, asked whom the people would trust in the king's absence, answered that they would follow the House of Eorl and named Éowyn.
Death at the Hornburg
Háma rode west with the king and fought in the night battle at Helm's Deep. He was killed before the gate of the Hornburg, and the Orcs hewed his body after he was dead, a thing Théoden threw in Saruman's face at the parley below Orthanc. He was buried in a grave of his own in the shadow of the Hornburg, apart from the mounds of the other fallen, and the king cast the first earth on it with his own hands.
