Leaflock

One of the three eldest

Treebeard told the Hobbits Merry and Pippin that of all the Ents who walked the great forests before the Darkness, only three now remained who had been there at the beginning: himself, Leaflock and Skinbark. Leaflock's Elvish name is Finglas, and both names describe him, for his head and shoulders are thick with a leafy growth like hair.

Growing tree-ish

Leaflock represents one of the two ways in which an Ent may fade. Over the long ages he has become sleepy and increasingly tree-like, and by the time of the War of the Ring he had all but ceased to move. Through the summer he stood alone in the meadows of Fangorn half asleep, covered in leaves, and only the winter roused him a little; he no longer went far. Treebeard spoke of him with regret rather than blame, as of an old friend who has gone somewhere he cannot follow. The Ents held that some of their kind became like trees and some trees became Entish, and Leaflock was well on the first road.

The Entmoot

Because of his condition Leaflock is not recorded among the Ents who gathered at Derndingle in March of T.A. 3019 to debate the war against Saruman, and he took no part in the destruction of Isengard. Treebeard, listing the strengths and weaknesses of his people to the Hobbits, gave Leaflock as an example of why the Ents were fewer and less able than they had been.

Legacy

Leaflock has no deeds in the histories. He is a measure of the age of the Ents and of their slow decline without the Entwives, and stands, quite literally, as a reminder of what Treebeard himself might one day become.

Leaflock stands drowsing in the meadows of Fangorn, growing ever more like a tree.
