Dale

Bilbo Baggins of Bag End was the respectable Hobbit whom Gandalf sent as burglar with Thorin Oakenshield's company to the Lonely Mountain, and who came home with a golden ring from beneath the Misty Mountains. His finding of the One Ring, his mercy to Gollum and his book set the whole War of the Ring in motion.

Thrór, grandfather of Thorin Oakenshield, restored the Kingdom under the Mountain in T.A. 2590 and ruled it in its greatest wealth until Smaug came in 2770. Driven to wander by exile and by his Ring, he entered Moria alone and was murdered there by the Orc Azog, and his death began the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.

The last great dragon of Middle-earth, who came down out of the North in T.A. 2770, destroyed Dale, drove the Dwarves from the Lonely Mountain and lay on their treasure for a hundred and seventy-one years. Roused by Bilbo's theft of a cup, he burned Lake-town and was killed by Bard's Black Arrow.

Bolg, son of Azog, was the chieftain of the goblins of the North who led the great host of Orcs, Wargs and bats against Erebor in T.A. 2941. His attack turned the quarrel over Smaug's hoard into the Battle of Five Armies, in which Thorin Oakenshield was mortally wounded and Bolg himself was crushed by Beorn.

Dáin Ironfoot slew the Orc Azog at the gate of Moria when he was thirty-two, ruled the Iron Hills, led five hundred Dwarves to the Battle of Five Armies, and succeeded Thorin Oakenshield as King under the Mountain. He ruled Erebor for seventy-eight years of prosperity and died in the War of the Ring defending the body of King Brand at the gate of the Mountain.

Thorin III Stonehelm, son of Dáin Ironfoot, became King under the Mountain when his father fell in the Battle of Dale in T.A. 3019. He held Erebor under siege, broke it with Bard II when the news of Sauron's fall came, and ruled the Dwarves of the North into the Fourth Age.

Bard the Bowman, a captain of archers in Lake-town and the heir of Girion of Dale, killed the dragon Smaug with the Black Arrow in 2941 as the dragon burned Esgaroth. He then led the Lake-men to the Lonely Mountain, fought in the Battle of Five Armies, and with his share of the treasure rebuilt Dale and became its king.
