The Calacirya was the deep pass the Valar cut through the Pelóri so that the light of the Two Trees could reach the shore of Eldamar and the Eldar could dwell within sight of both the Trees and the sea. Tirion stood in its mouth, and after the Flight of the Noldor it was the single guarded way into the Blessed Realm.

Caras Galadhon is the only city of Lothlórien, a great green hill deep in the Naith crowned and clothed with mallorn trees, in whose boughs the Galadhrim built their houses. Galadriel and Celeborn held their court on a wide flet in the greatest mallorn at the summit, and there the Fellowship of the Ring was received in January T.A. 3019.

Carn Dûm was the capital and chief fortress of Angmar, built at the northern end of the Misty Mountains by the Witch-king around T.A. 1300. From it the wars against the Dúnedain of the North were directed for over six centuries until Angmar's army was destroyed in 1975.

Cerin Amroth is the great green mound in the northern Naith of Lothlórien, ringed by two circles of trees and carpeted with the golden elanor and the white niphredil. It bore the house of King Amroth, and it was the place where Aragorn and Arwen plighted their troth in T.A. 2980 and where Arwen came to lay herself down and die in the Fourth Age.

The Crossings of Teiglin were the fords where the old road from Nargothrond to Doriath crossed the river Teiglin on the western edge of Brethil. The men of Haleth kept them against orcs, and Finduilas was slain and buried there.

Dimrill Dale is the deep valley on the eastern side of the Misty Mountains beneath the three Mountains of Moria, holding the lake of Mirrormere and the springs of the Silverlode. It was the front door of Khazad-dûm and the field of the Battle of Azanulbizar, the bloodiest fight of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.

Dol Amroth was the seaside city and castle of the Princes of Belfalas, the highest lords of Gondor after the Steward, named for the Elf-king Amroth who was lost in the bay below it. Prince Imrahil led its Swan-knights at the Pelennor Fields and ruled Minas Tirith in the days after the battle.

The Drúadan Forest was the wood on the slopes of Amon Dîn and Eilenach in Anórien, the last home of the Drúedain in Gondor. Its headman Ghân-buri-Ghân guided the Rohirrim through the forgotten Stonewain Valley to the Pelennor in March 3019, and Aragorn gave the forest to his people forever.

East Beleriand was the wide, sparsely peopled country between the Sirion and the Gelion: open plains and hills in the north held by the sons of Fëanor, and beyond the Andram a trackless southern forest where few ever went.

The Echoriath were the ring of mountains south of Ard-galen that enclosed the hidden vale of Tumladen and the city of Gondolin. The Eagles of Thorondor nested on their northern peaks and kept watch over the approaches.

Eglarest was the southern of the two walled havens of the Falas, built by Círdan's Falathrim at the mouth of the river Nenning. It held out through the Siege of Angband and fell to Morgoth's armies in the year after the Nirnaeth.

Eldalondë the Green was the haven at the head of the Bay of Eldanna in western Númenor, the chief landing-place of the Eldar of Tol Eressëa. It was reckoned the fairest harbour of the island, set among the sweet-scented trees the Elves had brought, whose fragrance could be caught from the sea.

Eldamar, Elvenhome, was the coast of Aman east of the Pelóri where the light of the Trees fell through the Calacirya, and the bay before it in which Tol Eressëa was anchored. Tirion of the Noldor and Alqualondë of the Teleri stood on its shore, and it was the home of the Eldar in the Blessed Realm.

The Emyn Muil were the tangled, rocky hills through which the Anduin cut on its way to Rauros, forming the northern march of Gondor. Frodo and Sam struggled through the eastern hills for days after leaving the Fellowship, and there they captured and tamed Gollum.

The Ephel Dúath, the Mountains of Shadow, were the great range that fenced Mordor on the west and south, dividing it from Ithilien and Gondor. Their passes, the Morgul Pass and Cirith Ungol, were the only ways into the Black Land from the west apart from the Black Gate.

Erech was a bare hill in the vale of Morthond where Isildur set a great black stone brought from Númenor. On it the King of the Mountains swore allegiance to Gondor and broke his word, and there Aragorn summoned the Dead to fulfil that oath in March 3019.

The Ered Engrin were the Iron Mountains that Melkor raised as a wall across the far north of Middle-earth. Utumno lay beneath their eastern part and Angband beneath their western end, so that they were the bulwark behind which Morgoth waged the wars of the First Age.

The Ered Gorgoroth were the precipitous southern wall of Dorthonion, dropping into the haunted valley of Nan Dungortheb. Ungoliant's offspring bred in their ravines, and only Beren is known to have crossed them and lived.

The Ered Luin, or Blue Mountains, are the long range that divides Lindon from Eriador. Home in the First Age to the dwarf-cities of Nogrod and Belegost, they were broken by the sea at the end of that Age, and in the Third Age they sheltered the exiled Durin's Folk under Thráin II and Thorin Oakenshield.

The Ered Wethrin were the mountains that walled Hithlum on the east and south. Sirion rose on their eastern face at Eithel Sirion, where the High Kings kept their chief fortress, and Narog rose at Ivrin on their southern side.

Eriador is the wide land between the Blue Mountains and the Misty Mountains, bounded in the south by the Greyflood. Once the heart of the North-kingdom of Arnor, by the end of the Third Age it was a largely empty country whose few settled pockets, the Shire, Bree and Rivendell, were quietly guarded by the Rangers.

Estolad was the open land south of Nan Elmoth and east of the river Celon where the first Men to enter Beleriand were settled by Finrod. The houses of Bëor and Marach camped there before receiving lands of their own, and some of their people remained until the end of the Age.

The Fords of Isen were the crossing of the river Isen below Isengard, the western door of Rohan. Two battles were fought there in early 3019 as Saruman's army broke into the Westfold, and Théodred, heir of Théoden, fell in the first.

The Gardens of Lórien were the dwelling of Irmo and Estë in the south of Valinor, the fairest gardens in the world and a place of rest, dreams and healing. Melian dwelt there before she went to Middle-earth, Olórin visited often, and Míriel's body was laid there when her spirit went to Mandos.
