Amrod and Amras

Lineage

Amrod and Amras were the sixth and seventh sons of Fëanor and Nerdanel, twins, and the youngest of the brothers. Their father-names were Pityafinwë and Telufinwë, the little and the last Finwë; their mother called them both Ambarussa for the russet hair they shared with Maedhros, inherited from Nerdanel's kin. They were alike in face and temper, and the histories seldom speak of one without the other. Like Celegorm they were hunters, and in Aman they roamed the woods of Oromë. They swore the Oath with their father and brothers and went into exile.

The south of East Beleriand

When the house of Fëanor took the east, the twins were given the wide, thinly peopled lands south of the Andram, the long wall of hills, between the river Gelion and the Blue Mountains. It was a country of woods and plains with no fortress, and the twins hunted it rather than ruled it, seldom coming north except when the war called. They fought in the Dagor Aglareb and in the long Siege they guarded the southern approaches.

The Bragollach and the Nirnaeth

In F.A. 455, when the Dagor Bragollach overran the March of Maedhros and Thargelion, Caranthir fled south and joined the twins, and together they fortified Amon Ereb, the lonely hill in the south-east, which became the last stronghold of the house of Fëanor. The twins marched to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad in F.A. 472 with the eastern host and shared in its ruin, escaping into Ossiriand with Maedhros and Maglor when the Easterlings of Ulfang turned on them.

The Kinslayings and death

Amrod and Amras took part in the assault on Menegroth in F.A. 506, and survived it when three of their brothers did not. In F.A. 538 they marched with Maedhros and Maglor against the refuge at the Mouths of Sirion, where Elwing held the Silmaril. The Havens were taken and Elwing escaped into the Sea, but the twins were both killed in the fighting, the last of the sons of Fëanor to die by the sword. Only Maedhros and Maglor remained.

Legacy

The twins have almost no separate story; they are the youngest of the brothers, the least guilty in counsel and the most obedient in deed, who followed the Oath to its end without ever leading it. Later writings give one of them a different fate, but the published Silmarillion has them die together at Sirion.

Both slain in the assault on the Havens of Sirion in F.A. 538.
