Dwalin

Lineage

Dwalin was born in T.A. 2772, two years after Smaug had driven Durin's Folk from Erebor, so that unlike his brother Balin he never saw the Mountain in its glory until he was old. He was the younger son of Fundin, of the kindred of the kings, and so a distant cousin of Thorin Oakenshield and kinsman of Glóin and Gimli. Fundin was killed at Azanulbizar in 2799, when Dwalin was twenty-seven and fighting in the same battle.

Companion of Thráin and Thorin

Dwalin was a loyal follower of the royal house through its exile. In 2841 he went east with Thráin II and Balin on the journey that ended with Thráin's disappearance in Mirkwood, and he came back to the Blue Mountains with his brother. A century later he was the first of Thorin's company at Bilbo's door, a blue-hooded Dwarf with a gold belt who hung up his hood without explanation and sat down to tea, the first sign to the astonished hobbit that something unusual was happening. He went through the whole quest, was caught by goblins and spiders and Elves with the rest, and fought in the Battle of Five Armies.

Later life

Dwalin settled at Erebor under Dáin Ironfoot and did not go with Balin to Moria in 2989. He was still alive when Glóin came to Rivendell in 3018 and reported him well, and he survived the War of the Ring and the Battle of Dale. He died in the year 91 of the Fourth Age at the age of three hundred and forty, the oldest Dwarf in the histories apart from the long-lived Durins. His extraordinary age is the last thing recorded of the company of Thorin.
