Glóin

Lineage

Glóin was born in T.A. 2783, the younger son of Gróin, of the kindred of Durin's kings through Borin, brother of Dáin I. His brother was Óin, and his son, born in 2879, was Gimli. He grew up in the years of exile in Dunland and the Blue Mountains, and was sixteen at the time of Azanulbizar, too young to fight.

The quest of Erebor

Glóin came to Bag End with his brother in 2941, and it was he who voiced the company's doubts most plainly, remarking within Bilbo's hearing that the hobbit looked more like a grocer than a burglar. That remark stung Bilbo into joining. On the road Glóin and Óin were the fire-makers, and Glóin shared every hardship of the journey from the trolls to the Battle of Five Armies. He came out of it a rich Dwarf, settled at Erebor under Dáin Ironfoot, and did not follow Balin to Moria in 2989.

Rivendell

In 3018, after messengers from Mordor had three times come to Dáin asking after hobbits and a ring, the king sent Glóin with Gimli to Rivendell to warn Bilbo and take counsel with Elrond. At the feast on the night of Frodo's recovery Glóin sat beside the hobbit and told him the news of the North: Dáin old but hale, Dale prospering under Brand, Bombur too fat to walk, and no word from Balin's colony. At the Council of Elrond the next day he reported Sauron's offer of rings and the return of Moria in exchange for news of the hobbit, and thus made plain that the Enemy was hunting the Ring. When the Company was chosen, Glóin's son went in it for the Dwarves.

Later life and death

Glóin returned to Erebor and lived through the Battle of Dale and the coming of the Fourth Age. He died in the year 15 of the Fourth Age at the age of two hundred and fifty-one. His name appears in the family tree of Durin's Folk as the link between the company of Thorin and the Fellowship of the Ring, and Gimli's pride in being Glóin's son runs through the whole account of the war.
