Biography
Birth and lineage
Eldarion was born in the early Fourth Age in Minas Tirith, the son of Aragorn, King Elessar of the Reunited Kingdom, and Arwen, the daughter of Elrond who had chosen a mortal life to marry him. His name means son of the Eldar, and it fitted his descent: through his mother he was the grandson of Elrond and the great-grandson of Galadriel, and through both parents he descended from Lúthien, Eärendil and the kings of Númenor. He had several sisters, whose names are not recorded, and he was the only son.
Succession
Eldarion grew to manhood in the long peace of his father's reign and was already a man of full years when Aragorn, in Fo.A. 120, judged that his life was complete and chose to lay it down. In the House of the Kings on the Silent Street the old king gave Eldarion the winged crown of Gondor and the sceptre of Arnor, and bade him farewell, and the son went out so that the king could say his last words to the queen alone. Eldarion then reigned as the second King of the Reunited Kingdom, ruling from Minas Tirith over Gondor and the restored North Kingdom. The published texts say nothing of his reign or of its length, but it is implied that his father's foresight expected it to be long and that the line of Elessar endured through him into the ages of Men that followed.
