King of Khazad-dûm
Durin VI was the last King of Khazad-dûm before its fall. In his reign the Dwarves, delving for mithril beneath Caradhras, released the Balrog that had hidden there since the War of Wrath, and it slew him in T.A. 1980; from that day it was called Durin's Bane.
Balrog of Morgoth
Durin's Bane was a Balrog of Morgoth that escaped the War of Wrath and lay hidden beneath the Misty Mountains until the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, delving for mithril, released it in T.A. 1980. It slew two Dwarf-kings, emptied Moria, and ruled the dark there for a thousand years until Gandalf fought it from the Bridge of Khazad-dûm to the peak of Zirakzigil and cast it down.
King of Gondor
Eärnil II was the general who saved Gondor from the Wainriders at the Battle of the Camp in 1944 and was chosen king over Arvedui of Arthedain the following year. He sent his son Eärnur north to destroy Angmar, and was the second-to-last king of Gondor.
King of Gondor
Eärnur, son of Eärnil II, was the thirty-third and last King of Gondor. As a young captain he led the fleet that destroyed Angmar at the Battle of Fornost in 1975; as king he accepted the Witch-king's challenge to single combat in 2050, rode to Minas Morgul, and was never seen again.
First King of Númenor
Elros, twin brother of Elrond and son of Eärendil and Elwing, chose under the Choice of the Peredhil to be counted among Men. He led the Edain over the sea to the new land of Númenor and reigned there for four hundred and ten years as Tar-Minyatur, the first of a line of kings that ended with Elendil's heirs on the thrones of Gondor and Arnor.
Lady of the Havens of Sirion
Elwing, daughter of Dior and Nimloth and granddaughter of Beren and Lúthien, carried the Silmaril out of the ruin of Doriath and refused to yield it to the sons of Fëanor. When they sacked the Havens of Sirion she cast herself into the sea with the jewel and was borne up as a white bird to her husband Eärendil, with whom she reached Valinor. She chose the fate of the Elves and dwells on the shore of Aman.
Lord of the Éothéod
Eorl the Young, lord of the Éothéod, led his horsemen south to save Gondor at the Field of Celebrant in 2510 and received the province of Calenardhon as the reward. He swore the Oath of Eorl with the Steward Cirion, founded the kingdom of Rohan, and was the first of its kings; his people were named the Rohirrim after him.
Queen of Númenor
Erendis of the Westlands was the wife of Tar-Aldarion, the Mariner-King of Númenor. Their long courtship and short marriage were destroyed by his voyages, and she withdrew with their daughter Ancalimë to her house at Emerië, where she raised the future Queen to distrust men. She died in the sea in S.A. 985.
High King of the Noldor
Fingon the Valiant, eldest son of Fingolfin, rescued Maedhros from Thangorodrim and so healed the breach in the Noldor, drove Glaurung back at his first appearance, and succeeded his father as High King. He was slain by Gothmog at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the battle he had helped to plan.
Lord of the House of the Golden Flower
Glorfindel was lord of the House of the Golden Flower in Gondolin, golden-haired and reckoned among the mightiest of the Noldor of the Hidden City. He died killing a Balrog above the pass of Cirith Thoronath so that the refugees of Gondolin could escape, and by long tradition he is the same Glorfindel who returned to Middle-earth, routed the Witch-king at Fornost, carried Frodo to the Ford of Bruinen, and sat at the Council of Elrond.
Lord of Balrogs
Gothmog was the Lord of Balrogs and high-captain of Angband, the deadliest of Morgoth's servants in battle. He gave Fëanor his death-wounds, killed the High King Fingon and took Húrin captive at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and led the assault on Gondolin, where he and Ecthelion of the Fountain slew each other.
Counsellor of King Théoden
Gríma son of Gálmód, called Wormtongue, was the counsellor of King Théoden who secretly served Saruman and poisoned the king's mind and body until Gandalf exposed him. Driven from Edoras, he became Saruman's wretched servant in Orthanc and in the Shire, and at the very end of the War of the Ring he cut his master's throat on the doorstep of Bag End and was shot by hobbit archers.
Lord of the Eagles
The Windlord, lord of the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains in the Third Age and swiftest of his kind. He carried Gandalf from the roof of Orthanc, bore him from the mountain-top after the fall of the Balrog, fought before the Black Gate, and with Landroval and Meneldor lifted Frodo and Sam from the slopes of Mount Doom.
Lord of Dor-lómin
Hador Lórindol, Goldenhead, was the beloved of Fingolfin who received the lordship of Dor-lómin in F.A. 416 and gathered the people of Marach there. The Third House of the Edain took his name. He fell with his younger son Gundor defending Eithel Sirion in the Dagor Bragollach.
Chieftain of the Haladin
Haleth was the daughter of Haldad and the chieftain who saved the Haladin from destruction in Thargelion, refused the protection of Caranthir, and led her people west to the forest of Brethil. The second house of the Edain took her name, and she is the only woman recorded as ruling one of the three houses.
King of the Mark
Helm Hammerhand, ninth King of Rohan, killed the Dunlendish lord Freca with a single blow of his fist and so began the war in which Wulf, Freca's son, overran the Mark. Besieged in the Hornburg through the Long Winter, Helm went out alone at night to kill his enemies with his hands, and died standing on the Dike, frozen in the snow. The fortress of Helm's Deep bears his name.
Captain of Dogs (as Celegorm's hound)
The great hound of Valinor, given by Oromë to Celegorm and brought to Middle-earth in the exile of the Noldor. Fated to speak three times and to die only by the greatest wolf ever born, he forsook his master for Lúthien, overthrew Sauron on Tol Sirion, and died slaying Carcharoth in Doriath.
Huor, younger son of Galdor of Dor-lómin, was carried with his brother Húrin to Gondolin as a boy and fell beside him holding the Fen of Serech in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Before he died he foretold to Turgon that a new star would rise from their two houses; his son, born after his death, was Tuor, father of Eärendil.
Princess of Gondolin
Idril Celebrindal, only child of Turgon of Gondolin, married the mortal Tuor and bore Eärendil, the mariner who saved both kindreds. Her foresight built the secret way out of the hidden city, and by it she led the survivors of Gondolin's fall to safety. She was the second union of Elves and Men, and the ancestress of the Half-elven.
Prince of Dol Amroth
Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth, was the greatest of the lords of Gondor's fiefs in the War of the Ring and the uncle of Boromir and Faramir. He brought his knights to Minas Tirith, fought on the Pelennor Fields, ruled the city between Denethor's death and Faramir's recovery, and marched with Aragorn to the Black Gate.
Lieutenant of Dol Guldur
Khamûl the Easterling was the second of the Nine Ringwraiths after the Witch-king, and the only one besides him whose name survives. He commanded Dol Guldur from T.A. 2951, was the Black Rider who came closest to Frodo in the Shire, and perished with the rest of the Nine in the fire of Mount Doom.
Lord of the House of the Mole
Maeglin was the son of Eöl the Dark Elf and Aredhel of the Noldor, born in the shadowed wood of Nan Elmoth and brought by his mother to Gondolin, where he rose to be the greatest of Turgon's counsellors. His unlawful desire for his cousin Idril soured into hatred; taken alive by Orcs, he bought his own life and the promise of Idril by telling Morgoth where the hidden city lay, and Tuor threw him from its walls when it burned.
Lord of Maglor's Gap
Maglor, second son of Fëanor, was the greatest singer and harper of the Noldor, who held the gap between Himring and the Blue Mountains and fostered Elrond and Elros after the Third Kinslaying. Last of his brothers, he cast his Silmaril into the Sea and wandered the shores of Middle-earth in grief, singing.
Doomsman of the Valar
Mandos, properly named Námo, is the Doomsman of the Valar and keeper of the Halls of the Dead, where the spirits of slain Elves wait. He forgets nothing and knows all that will be, save what Eru keeps hidden, and he pronounced the Doom of the Noldor and the judgement on Lúthien and Beren.
