Steward of Gondor
Mardil Voronwë, Steward to the last two kings of Gondor, took up the rule of the realm when Eärnur vanished into Minas Morgul in 2050. He was the first of the Ruling Stewards, whose house governed Gondor in the king's name for nearly a thousand years until the return of Aragorn.
Queen of Doriath
Melian is the Maia who took bodily form in Middle-earth, wedded the Elven-king Thingol and reigned with him in Doriath, protecting the realm for an age with the Girdle of her power. Mother of Lúthien and the only Ainu to have children among the Eldar, she was the wisest counsellor in Beleriand; after Thingol's death she withdrew her protection and returned to Valinor.
Master of Buckland
Meriadoc Brandybuck, heir of Buckland and organiser of the conspiracy that brought Frodo's friends on the quest, became esquire to King Théoden and helped Éowyn destroy the Witch-king on the Pelennor. He later led the hobbits at Bywater, ruled Buckland as Master, and wrote the Shire's first books of lore.
Master of Bar-en-Danwedh
Mîm was the last of the Petty-dwarves, the outcast kindred who had lived in Beleriand before the Elves. Captured by Túrin's outlaws, he gave them shelter in his halls under Amon Rûdh, betrayed them to the Orcs after his son was killed, took the hoard of Nargothrond for himself when the dragon left it, and was slain there by Húrin.
Lady of Dor-lómin
Morwen Eledhwen, daughter of Baragund of the House of Bëor, was the wife of Húrin and the mother of Túrin and Nienor. Proud, beautiful and unbending, she held her house in Dor-lómin under the Easterlings for more than twenty years and died at the grave of her children beside the Teiglin.
Nienor, daughter of Húrin and Morwen, was born after her father's capture and never knew her brother Túrin. Robbed of her memory by Glaurung, she was found by the woodmen of Brethil, named Níniel, and married Túrin unknowing. When the dying dragon restored her memory she threw herself into the Teiglin.
Huntsman of the Valar
Oromë is the huntsman of the Valar, lord of forests and hunter of monsters, who alone of the Powers loved to ride in Middle-earth during the darkness. He discovered the newly awakened Elves at Cuiviénen, led them on the Great Journey, and his horn Valaróma and his horse Nahar became legends among Elves and Men.
Thain of the Shire
Peregrin Took, youngest of the Fellowship, was the heir of the Thain whose curiosity drew Sauron's eye through the palantír and whose loyalty saved Faramir from the pyre. He fought at the Black Gate, roused the Tookland against the ruffians, and ruled the Shire as its thirty-second Thain.
Wizard
Radagast the Brown, Aiwendil in Valinor, was the Istar of Yavanna's people, a master of birds and beasts and of the changing of shapes and hues, who settled at Rhosgobel by Mirkwood. Gentle and unworldly, he was used by Saruman as an unwitting messenger to trap Gandalf, but his birds also carried the news that brought Gwaihir to Orthanc. His later fate is unrecorded.
Lord of the Mearas
Chief of the Mearas, the great horses of Rohan, and the swiftest horse of his day. Taken from Théoden's herds by Gandalf in T.A. 3018 and afterwards given to him outright, he carried the wizard across half of Middle-earth in the War of the Ring, and alone of all beasts stood unmoved before the Witch-king at the broken gate of Minas Tirith.
Sixth King of Númenor
Tar-Aldarion, born Anardil, was the sixth King of Númenor and the first of its great mariners. He founded the Guild of Venturers, built the haven of Vinyalondë in Middle-earth, and befriended Gil-galad, but his voyages destroyed his marriage to Erendis. He changed the law of succession so that his daughter Ancalimë could reign after him.
Rightful Queen of Númenor
Tar-Míriel, only child of Tar-Palantir, should have been the fourth Ruling Queen of Númenor. Her cousin Pharazôn forced her into marriage against the law and took the sceptre in her name, and she lived as his queen under the name Ar-Zimraphel until the Downfall, when the sea took her as she sought the summit of the Meneltarma.
Twenty-fourth King of Númenor
Tar-Palantir, born Inziladûn, was the twenty-fourth King of Númenor and the last to repent of the pride of the kings. He restored the reverence of the Valar, tended the White Tree, and foretold that when it died the line of kings would end; but his brother Gimilkhâd led the King's Men against him, and after his death his daughter Míriel was dispossessed by Ar-Pharazôn.
King of the Men of the White Mountains
The King of the Dead was the ruler of the Men of the White Mountains who swore allegiance to Isildur on the Stone of Erech and then refused his call to war against Sauron. Cursed to find no rest until the oath was kept, he and his people haunted the Paths of the Dead for three thousand years, until Aragorn summoned them to Pelargir and released them.
A many-armed creature of the dark lake before the West-gate of Moria, which took the Dwarf Óin of Balin's colony and, a generation later, seized Frodo Baggins and sealed the Fellowship inside the mines. What it was is never explained.
King of the Eagles of the Crissaegrim
King of the Great Eagles of the First Age and the mightiest bird that ever flew, with wings that spanned thirty fathoms. Sent by Manwë to watch over the exiled Noldor, he rescued Maedhros from Thangorodrim, bore away the body of Fingolfin, guarded Gondolin, carried Beren and Lúthien from the gate of Angband, and led the eagles against the dragons in the War of Wrath.
King of Durin's Folk
Thráin II, son of Thrór and father of Thorin Oakenshield, led the Dwarves in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs and afterwards founded halls in the Blue Mountains. Lured by his Ring toward Erebor, he was captured by Sauron's servants and died in the dungeons of Dol Guldur, where Gandalf found him and received the map and key of Erebor.
King of the Woodland Realm
Thranduil, son of Oropher, ruled the Silvan Elves of northern Mirkwood from underground halls for the whole of the Third Age. He led the remnant of his father's host home from the Last Alliance, imprisoned Thorin's company, fought at the Battle of Five Armies, held Gollum as a prisoner, and in the War of the Ring defeated the assault of Dol Guldur under his own trees.
King of Durin's Folk
Thrór, grandfather of Thorin Oakenshield, restored the Kingdom under the Mountain in T.A. 2590 and ruled it in its greatest wealth until Smaug came in 2770. Driven to wander by exile and by his Ring, he entered Moria alone and was murdered there by the Orc Azog, and his death began the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
Master of wood, water and hill
Tom Bombadil is the enigmatic Master of the Old Forest, called Iarwain Ben-adar, the oldest and fatherless, by the Elves, who remembers the world before the coming of the Dark Lord and over whom the One Ring has no power. He rescued the four Hobbits from Old Man Willow and the Barrow-wight in T.A. 3018 and lives with his wife Goldberry beside the Withywindle.
Eldest of the Ents
Treebeard, called Fangorn in the Elvish tongue, is the eldest of the Ents and the oldest living creature that walks beneath the Sun, the master of the forest that bears his name. Roused by the Hobbits Merry and Pippin, he led the Ents to the destruction of Isengard in the War of the Ring, became the keeper of Saruman and afterwards of the Treegarth of Orthanc, and never ceased to mourn the lost Entwives.
Champion of the Valar
Tulkas is the strongest of the Valar and the last to come into Arda, arriving from the Timeless Halls when the others were hard pressed by Melkor. Laughing in battle and tireless, he drove Melkor from the World in the first war, wrestled him down in the Battle of the Powers, and alone of the Valar never trusted him.
Queen of the Earth
Yavanna is the Vala of all growing things, from the great trees to the moss on stones, and the spouse of Aulë. She sang the Two Trees of Valinor into being, obtained the Ents as guardians of the forests, and coaxed from the dying Trees the fruit and flower that became the Sun and Moon.
Lord of Dorthonion
Aegnor, youngest son of Finarfin, held the northern slopes of Dorthonion with his brother Angrod for four centuries of the Siege of Angband. His name means Fell Fire, for the fierceness of his spirit in battle, and he died in the flames of the Dagor Bragollach beside his brother.
