Lord of the Eagles
The Windlord, lord of the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains in the Third Age and swiftest of his kind. He carried Gandalf from the roof of Orthanc, bore him from the mountain-top after the fall of the Balrog, fought before the Black Gate, and with Landroval and Meneldor lifted Frodo and Sam from the slopes of Mount Doom.
Captain of Dogs (as Celegorm's hound)
The great hound of Valinor, given by Oromë to Celegorm and brought to Middle-earth in the exile of the Noldor. Fated to speak three times and to die only by the greatest wolf ever born, he forsook his master for Lúthien, overthrew Sauron on Tol Sirion, and died slaying Carcharoth in Doriath.
Lord of the Mearas
Chief of the Mearas, the great horses of Rohan, and the swiftest horse of his day. Taken from Théoden's herds by Gandalf in T.A. 3018 and afterwards given to him outright, he carried the wizard across half of Middle-earth in the War of the Ring, and alone of all beasts stood unmoved before the Witch-king at the broken gate of Minas Tirith.
King of the Eagles of the Crissaegrim
King of the Great Eagles of the First Age and the mightiest bird that ever flew, with wings that spanned thirty fathoms. Sent by Manwë to watch over the exiled Noldor, he rescued Maedhros from Thangorodrim, bore away the body of Fingolfin, guarded Gondolin, carried Beren and Lúthien from the gate of Angband, and led the eagles against the dragons in the War of Wrath.
A half-starved pony bought from Bill Ferny at Bree, nursed back to strength by Sam Gamgee, and taken as the pack-beast of the Fellowship of the Ring as far as the West-gate of Moria. He found his own way home to Bree and was reunited with Sam a year later.
Father of the Mearas
The wild white horse that killed Léod, lord of the Éothéod, and was tamed by Léod's son Eorl as the price of his father's death. He carried Eorl to the Field of Celebrant, lived as long as his master, and was the forefather of the Mearas, the horses of the kings of Rohan.
The white Elf-horse of Glorfindel of Rivendell, hung with silver bells, which carried the wounded Frodo Baggins across the Ford of Bruinen ahead of the Nine Riders in October of T.A. 3018.
Brother of Gwaihir the Windlord and one of the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains. He fought the Nazgûl before the Black Gate and flew with Gwaihir and Meneldor to carry Frodo and Sam from the slopes of Mount Doom.
A young and swift Great Eagle of the Misty Mountains who flew with Gwaihir and Landroval into Mordor after the fall of Sauron and helped to carry Frodo and Sam from the slopes of Mount Doom.
The great horse of Oromë the Hunter, white in daylight and silver by night, whose hooves the Elves heard at Cuiviénen before they saw the Vala who found them. The Rohirrim believed their Mearas descended from horses brought out of the West by Oromë.
Chief of the Great Ravens of the Mountain
The aged chief of the ravens of the Lonely Mountain, son of Carc, who brought Thorin's company the news of Smaug's death, carried Thorin's summons to Dáin of the Iron Hills, and counselled peace with the Men of the Lake before the Battle of Five Armies.
The white horse of King Théoden of Rohan, who carried him from Edoras to Helm's Deep and on to the Pelennor Fields. Struck by a dart of the Witch-king, he fell and crushed his master beneath him, and was buried on the field under a mound that stayed green ever after.
An ancient thrush of the Lonely Mountain whose snail-cracking on the doorstep marked the keyhole of the secret door on Durin's Day, and who carried Bilbo's account of Smaug's bare patch to Bard in Lake-town, so that the Black Arrow found its mark.
