Ered Lómin

The western wall

The Ered Lómin, the Echoing Mountains, were the coastal range on the western side of Hithlum, separating Dor-lómin from the sea. To the north they ran up along the firth of Drengist and into the region of Lammoth, which was named for the terrible echoes of the cry of Morgoth when Ungoliant held him fast; Dor-lómin itself, the Land of Echoes, took its name from the same mountains. To the south they met the Ered Wethrin above Nevrast.

In the years of the Siege the Noldor of Turgon's following cut a tunnel beneath the western mountains from Dor-lómin to the head of the firth. This was Annon-in-Gelydh, the Gate of the Noldor, a hidden way by which the Elves could pass between Hithlum and the coast without crossing the passes. Turgon used it, and later it was largely forgotten, though the Grey-elves of Mithrim remembered it.

After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and the coming of the Easterlings, the surviving Elves of Mithrim hid in caves in the Ered Lómin, and they fostered Tuor there. When Tuor later escaped from thraldom he found the Gate of the Noldor, followed its river down through the dark under the mountains, and came out into a ravine on the western side where two Noldor, Gelmir and Arminas, told him to seek Turgon. From there he went down the firth and south into Nevrast. The mountains were drowned with the rest of the north at the end of the Age.
