Lammoth

The land of the echo

Lammoth lay on the north-western coast of Middle-earth, north of the firth of Drengist, between the sea and the Ered Lómin. It was a bare and desolate country, the last land before the ice of the Helcaraxë, and no people ever settled there. Its name came from the echoes that lived in the cliffs and mountains, so that any loud cry was repeated and multiplied.

The echoes were first woken by Morgoth. After the destruction of the Two Trees he fled across the Grinding Ice with Ungoliant, and when they came to this shore she demanded the payment he had promised her, the gems of Formenos, and then the Silmarils. Morgoth refused to yield the Silmarils, and Ungoliant, grown huge on the light she had drunk, wrapped him in her webs. His scream of rage and fear rang through the mountains, and the Balrogs who had hidden in the depths of Angband heard it and came with whips of flame to drive her off. The sound was never wholly forgotten by the land, and the Elves later said that the ground there was still filled with the memory of it.

The Noldor

Fëanor's host sailed into Drengist and landed at Losgar on its shore. When Fingolfin's people finished their crossing of the Helcaraxë, they came ashore in Lammoth as the first Moon rose, and it was here that Fingolfin's trumpets sounded, so that the echoes of the mountains answered them. From Lammoth his host marched through the passes into Hithlum.
