Bofur
Blue Mountains; Ereborb. Unknown, Third Age · d. Unknown; alive in T.A. 3018
Bofur, brother of Bombur and cousin of Bifur, was one of Thorin Oakenshield's thirteen companions on the quest of Erebor. He came of the Dwarves of Moria rather than of the royal line and lived at the Mountain after the dragon's fall.
Biography
Origins
Bofur was a Longbeard of the old stock of Moria, descended from the Dwarves who had lived in Khazad-dûm before the Balrog and who afterward scattered through the North. His brother was Bombur and his cousin Bifur. The three were not kin of Thorin Oakenshield, but they had followed the exiled royal house to the Blue Mountains and were accepted into his company for the quest of Erebor.
The quest of Erebor
Bofur arrived at Bag End in a heap with Bombur and Thorin, when Bilbo opened the door too suddenly and the three fell in on top of one another. He wore a yellow hood and played the clarinet with Bifur. He is one of the less prominent members of the company in the story, but he is present in every scene of it, from the trolls' sack to the Elvenking's cells. When Bilbo was choosing which Dwarves would come with him into the tunnel of the secret door, Bofur was on the list of those who stayed above, and he was among the Dwarves who, tired of waiting on the ledge, were sent down to fetch the baggage as the others went in. He fought in the Battle of Five Armies and lived.
Later life
Bofur settled at Erebor with the rest of the company after Dáin Ironfoot became king. He did not join Balin's colony of Moria, and in 3018 Glóin named him among the companions who were still living at the Mountain. The histories say nothing else of him.
