Dori

Origins

Dori was a Longbeard of the exiled community in the Blue Mountains and a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company. He arrived at Bag End with Nori and Ori, all three in purple hoods, and the three are generally taken to be brothers, though the published texts call them companions and not kin by name. They were of the same house as Thorin and of the old population of Khazad-dûm, and Dori is the one of the three about whom the story tells most.

The quest of Erebor

Dori was known in the company as the strongest of them and, in his own opinion, the one who did the most for Bilbo. In the goblin tunnels under the High Pass, when the Dwarves were running from the Great Goblin's guards, it was Dori who carried the hobbit on his back, and when goblins caught him from behind in the dark he dropped Bilbo, which is how the hobbit came to be lost alone and to find the Ring. When the company was treed by the Wargs, Dori climbed down to the lowest branch to let Bilbo scramble up onto his shoulders, and when the Eagles came he was the last Dwarf carried off, hanging from the eagle's legs. In Mirkwood he was one of the Dwarves wrapped by the spiders, and he sat in the Elvenking's cells, rode the barrels, and fought in the Battle of Five Armies. He was also the flute-player at Bilbo's party, with Nori and Ori.

Later life

Dori lived at Erebor after the quest and stayed there when Ori went with Balin to Moria. Glóin named him among the companions still living at the Mountain in 3018; nothing more is told of him.
