Iron Hillsb. T.A. 2665 · d. T.A. 2799
Náin, son of Grór and father of Dáin Ironfoot, was Lord of the Iron Hills. He brought fresh forces to the Battle of Azanulbizar in T.A. 2799, fought his way to the gate of Moria, and was slain there by Azog before his son avenged him.
Biography
Lineage
Náin was born in T.A. 2665, the son of Grór, youngest brother of Thrór. When the Longbeards abandoned the Grey Mountains in 2590, Grór led part of the people east to the Iron Hills and founded a lordship there, and Náin was his heir. His own son was Dáin, born in 2767.
Azanulbizar
When Thráin II summoned the houses of the Dwarves to avenge Thrór, Náin answered with the Dwarves of the Iron Hills. He arrived at the last battle of the war, in the Dimrill Dale below the East-gate of Moria, when the Dwarves were losing ground, and his fresh and heavily armed company drove through the Orcs to the gate itself. There Náin shouted a challenge to Azog, and the Orc-chief came out with his guard. Náin was exhausted and blind with rage; his blow missed, and Azog's return stroke broke his neck, though his mail held. Azog looked out over the field expecting to see his army winning, and saw instead that it was routed. Náin's son Dáin then struck off Azog's head.
Legacy
Náin is remembered chiefly through his son, who took the Iron Hills after him and became King under the Mountain. His death made the Iron Hills the avengers of the royal house twice over, at Azanulbizar and later at Erebor.
