Thorin I, son of Thráin I, was the second King under the Mountain. In T.A. 2210 he led most of Durin's Folk from Erebor to the richer Grey Mountains in the north, where they prospered until the dragons drove them out.
Biography
Lineage
Thorin was born at Erebor in T.A. 2035, the son of Thráin I, founder of the Kingdom under the Mountain. He succeeded his father in 2190.
The move north
In 2210 Thorin abandoned Erebor. Many of the Longbeards had already gathered in the Grey Mountains, the Ered Mithrin, north of Mirkwood, where the ore was rich and the halls of Dwarves who had scattered from Moria were already established, and Thorin led the main body of his people to join them. For nearly four hundred years the Grey Mountains were the seat of Durin's line.
Death and legacy
Thorin died in 2289 and was succeeded by his son Glóin, from whom the line passed through Óin and Náin II to Dáin I. The northern prosperity ended with the cold-drakes of the Withered Heath, which killed Dáin I in 2589 and drove the Dwarves south again to Erebor and the Iron Hills. Thorin I is the first of three Thorins in the royal line; the second is Thorin Oakenshield and the third Thorin Stonehelm.
