Lord of Nan Elmoth
Eöl the Dark Elf, a kinsman of Thingol who chose the shadowed wood of Nan Elmoth over Doriath, was a smith of surpassing skill who forged the black swords Anglachel and Anguirel. He took Aredhel of Gondolin as his wife, fathered Maeglin, and when they escaped him he followed them to the hidden city, killed Aredhel with a poisoned javelin meant for their son, and was thrown from the walls.
Herald of Manwë
Eönwë is the herald and banner-bearer of Manwë, counted with Ilmarë as the chief of the Maiar and unmatched in Arda in feats of arms. He led the host of the Valar into Middle-earth in the War of Wrath, took the Silmarils from Morgoth's crown, refused to judge the surrendered Sauron, and taught the Edain before they sailed to Númenor.
Lord of the Westfold
Erkenbrand, Lord of the Westfold and master of Helm's Deep, gathered the scattered Rohirrim after the Second Battle of the Fords of Isen and came down over the Dike at dawn with Gandalf and a thousand men to break Saruman's siege of the Hornburg. Under King Éomer he became Marshal of the West-mark.
Farmer of Bamfurlong
Farmer Maggot of Bamfurlong in the Marish, the mushroom-grower whose dogs terrified the young Frodo, turned a Black Rider off his land, sheltered the hobbits and drove them to the ferry. Tom Bombadil counted him a friend and a hobbit of deep roots.
Father of the Mearas
The wild white horse that killed Léod, lord of the Éothéod, and was tamed by Léod's son Eorl as the price of his father's death. He carried Eorl to the Field of Celebrant, lived as long as his master, and was the forefather of the Mearas, the horses of the kings of Rohan.
Heir of Thorin Oakenshield
Fíli, elder son of Thorin's sister Dís, was with his brother Kíli the youngest of the thirteen Dwarves on the quest of Erebor, and as Thorin's sister-son he was his uncle's heir. He fell in the Battle of Five Armies defending Thorin's body.
King of the Noldor in Aman
Finarfin, youngest son of Finwë and Indis, was the wisest and fairest of the princes of the Noldor. He alone turned back from the rebellion after the Doom of Mandos and ruled the Noldor who remained in Tirion; his children Finrod, Orodreth, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel went on to Middle-earth.
Princess of Nargothrond
Finduilas, daughter of Orodreth and granddaughter of Finarfin, was the last princess of Nargothrond. Betrothed to Gwindor before the Nirnaeth, she could not love the broken thrall who came back from Angband and gave her heart instead to Túrin, who would not take her. She was taken in the sack of the city, speared to a tree by the Orcs at the Crossings of Teiglin, and buried in the mound called Haudh-en-Elleth.
King of the Noldor
Finwë is the first King of the Noldor, who led his people to Aman as one of the three ambassadors and ruled them in Tirion. Father of Fëanor by Míriel and of Fingolfin and Finarfin by Indis, he was slain by Melkor at Formenos, the first death by violence in the Blessed Realm.
Lord of Dor-lómin
Galdor the Tall, elder son of Hador, was lord of Dor-lómin for seven years after the Dagor Bragollach. He married Hareth of the Haladin and was the father of Húrin and Huor. He was slain by an arrow at Eithel Sirion in F.A. 462.
Thain of the Shire
Gerontius Took, the Old Took, was Thain of the Shire for over forty years, father of twelve children, friend of Gandalf, and at a hundred and thirty the longest-lived hobbit on record until Bilbo. Nearly every hobbit in the story of the Ring descended from him.
Headman of the Wild Men of Drúadan Forest
Ghân-buri-Ghân was the headman of the Wild Men of the Drúadan Forest. In March 3019 he guided the Rohirrim by a forgotten road through the hills to the Pelennor Fields, past the Orcs who had blocked the Great West Road, asking in return only that his people be left in peace.
Gilraen the Fair, a woman of the Dúnedain of the North, was the wife of Arathorn II and the mother of Aragorn. Widowed after four years of marriage, she carried her son to Rivendell to be hidden and raised, and lived to see him a grown man but not a king.
Glóin, brother of Óin and father of Gimli, was one of Thorin's companions on the quest of Erebor. Nearly eighty years later Dáin sent him to Rivendell, where he told the Council of Elrond of Sauron's messengers to the Mountain and saw his son chosen for the Fellowship.
Daughter of the River
Goldberry, the River-daughter, is the wife of Tom Bombadil, a being of the Withywindle whom Tom found among the water-lilies and brought to his house. She welcomed the four Hobbits in September T.A. 3018, spoke to them of Tom's mastery, and sang them on their way from the hilltop above the Downs.
Captain of the Orcs of Minas Morgul
Gorbag was a captain of the Orcs of Minas Morgul who found the paralysed Frodo in Shelob's pass and carried him to the Tower of Cirith Ungol. His quarrel with Shagrat over Frodo's mithril-coat set the two garrisons killing each other, and he died on Shagrat's knife.
Gorlim son of Angrim was one of the twelve companions of Barahir in Dorthonion. Deceived by Sauron with a phantom of his lost wife Eilinel, he betrayed the outlaws' refuge, was killed for it, and as a ghost warned Beren too late in a dream.
Captain of the Orcs of Mordor
Grishnákh was the leader of the Mordor-orcs who joined Saruman's Uruk-hai in the raid that killed Boromir and captured Merry and Pippin. He alone among their captors seems to have known about the Ring, and he died trying to carry the hobbits off to search them for it on the night the Riders of Rohan surrounded the Orcs at the eaves of Fangorn.
Prince of Nargothrond
Gwindor, son of Guilin and a prince of Nargothrond, charged out of the line at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad in grief for his brother Gelmir and so broke the plan of the battle. Taken alive and enslaved in Angband for fourteen years, he escaped, guided Beleg to Túrin, brought Túrin to Nargothrond, lost Finduilas to him, and died at Tumhalad warning him that her life stood between him and his doom.
Ranger of the North
Halbarad was a Ranger of the North and a kinsman of Aragorn who led the thirty Dúnedain of the Grey Company south in the War of the Ring. He carried Arwen's standard through the Paths of the Dead and unfurled it on the Pelennor Fields, where he was killed.
Marchwarden of Lothlórien
Haldir was a marchwarden of the Galadhrim who, with his brothers Rúmil and Orophin, met the Fellowship of the Ring at the northern border of Lothlórien in January T.A. 3019, guided them across the Celebrant and through the wood to Caras Galadhon, and led them out again to the Anduin at their departure.
Gardener of Bag End
Hamfast Gamgee, the Gaffer, was Bilbo's gardener at Bag End for forty years and the father of Samwise. An authority on potatoes and on other people's business, he was turned out of Bagshot Row under the ruffians and lived to see it rebuilt as New Row.
King of the Vanyar
Ingwë is the king of the Vanyar and, by right of being first of the three ambassadors to see the light of the Trees, the High King of all the Elves. He led the first host of the Great Journey to Aman and never returned to Middle-earth.
Lord of Lórien
Irmo, usually called Lórien after his gardens, is the younger of the Fëanturi, the master of visions and dreams, whose gardens in Valinor are the fairest place in the World and a refuge for the weary. Melian and Olórin, who became Gandalf, both dwelt in his realm.
