King of the Mark
Thengel, sixteenth King of Rohan and father of Théoden, spent his youth in Gondor in the service of the Steward Turgon, married Morwen of Lossarnach, and returned unwillingly to rule the Mark on his father's death. A good king, he restored the realm after Fengel's greedy reign, and the young Aragorn served him under the name Thorongil.
Second Marshal of the Riddermark
Théodred, only child of King Théoden and Second Marshal of the Mark, commanded the defence of the Westfold against Saruman and fell at the First Battle of the Fords of Isen on 25 February 3019. His death left Éomer as the king's heir and was the grief that Gríma used to keep Théoden from acting.
King of Durin's Folk
Thráin I, son of Náin I, led Durin's Folk out of Moria after the Balrog slew his father and grandfather, and in T.A. 1999 founded the Kingdom under the Mountain at Erebor, where he discovered the Arkenstone.
Guide of the Moon
Tilion is a Maia of Oromë's hunting company, a lover of silver light, who was chosen to steer the vessel of the Moon made from the last flower of Telperion. Wayward in his course and drawn to Arien's fire, he was attacked by Morgoth's spirits of shadow and bears the scars on the Moon's face; he raised the first moonrise seven days before the Sun.
Captain of the Uruk-hai of Isengard
Uglúk was the captain of the Uruk-hai of Isengard who carried Merry and Pippin across Rohan after the breaking of the Fellowship. He held his quarrelling band together by force for three days and nights, and died fighting Éomer at the eaves of Fangorn when the Riders of Rohan destroyed the Orcs.
Lady of the Seas
Uinen, the Lady of the Seas, is a Maia of Ulmo and the spouse of Ossë, whose hair is spread through every water under the sky. She loves the creatures of the salt sea, restrains her husband's storms, brought him back from Melkor's temptation, wept for the Teleri at the Kinslaying, and was honoured by the mariners of Númenor as their protector.
Uldor the Accursed, son of Ulfang, was the Easterling whose treachery lost the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. He delayed the eastern host of Maedhros with false warnings, then turned on it in the battle, and was slain by Maglor.
Chieftain of the Easterlings
Ulfang the Black was a chieftain of the Easterlings who entered Beleriand after the Dagor Bragollach and took service with Caranthir while secretly in Morgoth's pay. His sons Ulfast, Ulwarth and Uldor betrayed the Eldar at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and his house is remembered as accursed.
King of Arnor
Valandil, youngest son of Isildur, was born in Rivendell on the eve of the Last Alliance and was the only one of Isildur's sons to survive the Disaster of the Gladden Fields. He became the third King of Arnor in T.A. 10 and through him the line of Isildur, and eventually Aragorn, descended.
Mariner of Gondolin
Voronwë, son of Aranwë of Gondolin, was the only survivor of the ships Turgon sent to seek Valinor. Spared by Ulmo and cast ashore at Nevrast, he met Tuor at Vinyamar and guided him through the Fell Winter to the hidden city, so that Ulmo's warning reached Turgon.
Usurper King of Rohan
Wulf, son of the half-Dunlendish lord Freca, fled Rohan when Helm Hammerhand killed his father and returned four years later at the head of a Dunlendish invasion. He took Edoras, sat in Meduseld as king through the Long Winter, and was slain there by Helm's nephew Fréaláf in 2759.
Aerin, a kinswoman of Húrin, was taken by force as a wife by the Easterling Brodda after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. From his house she secretly sent food and help to Morwen, and when Túrin killed Brodda she burned the hall and chose to die there rather than flee into the wild.
King of Lórien
Amdír was the Sindarin king of the Silvan Elves of Lórien in the Second Age and the father of Amroth. He led his people to the Last Alliance and was slain at the Battle of Dagorlad when his lightly armed host was cut off and driven into the marshes.
Wise-woman of the House of Bëor
Andreth was a wise-woman of the House of Bëor, daughter of Boromir and sister of Bregor, remembered for her learning in the lore of Men and for her love of Aegnor son of Finarfin, which was never fulfilled.
The white Elf-horse of Glorfindel of Rivendell, hung with silver bells, which carried the wounded Frodo Baggins across the Ford of Bruinen ahead of the Nine Riders in October of T.A. 3018.
Queen of Gondor
Berúthiel was the queen of Tarannon Falastur, twelfth King of Gondor, a Black Númenórean of Umbar who spied on the realm through her nine black cats and one white. Her husband set her adrift at sea and struck her name from the records, but the cats of Queen Berúthiel remained a byword in Gondor for creatures that find their way in the dark.
Bifur was one of the thirteen Dwarves who went with Thorin Oakenshield on the quest of Erebor. A cousin of Bofur and Bombur, he came of the Dwarves of Moria rather than of Durin's royal line, and after the quest he lived at the Mountain.
Bill Ferny was a sly and ill-reputed Man of Bree who spied for the Black Riders, sold the hobbits a starved pony at an extortionate price, and later joined the ruffians who troubled Bree and the Shire, ending as a gatekeeper on the Brandywine Bridge until Merry threw him out.
Bofur, brother of Bombur and cousin of Bifur, was one of Thorin Oakenshield's thirteen companions on the quest of Erebor. He came of the Dwarves of Moria rather than of the royal line and lived at the Mountain after the dragon's fall.
Bombur, the fattest of Thorin's thirteen companions, went on the quest of Erebor with his brother Bofur and cousin Bifur. He fell into the enchanted river of Mirkwood and slept for days, and in later life at the Mountain grew so heavy that six young Dwarves were needed to lift him.
Chieftain of the Easterlings
Bór was a chieftain of the Easterlings who came into Beleriand around F.A. 463 and, unlike Ulfang, kept faith with the Eldar. He and his three sons served Maedhros and Maglor, and in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad his sons slew the traitors Ulfast and Ulwarth before his whole house perished.
King of Dale
Brand, grandson of Bard the Bowman, was King of Dale during the War of the Ring. He refused Sauron's overtures, and in March 3019 he fell before the Gate of Erebor fighting the Easterlings beside Dáin Ironfoot.
Chieftain of the Easterlings in Dor-lómin
Brodda was an Easterling chieftain who took Húrin's lands, cattle and people in Dor-lómin after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and forced Húrin's kinswoman Aerin to marry him. He was killed in his own hall by Túrin in F.A. 495.
Thain of the Shire
Bucca of the Marish was the first Thain of the Shire, chosen in T.A. 1979 to hold the authority of the vanished king after the fall of Arthedain. His descendants the Oldbucks held the Thainship for twelve generations before becoming the Brandybucks of Buckland.
